Are some normal cameras better than DSLRs?

Are some new normal point and shoot cameras, or what ever they are called, better than old DSLR cameras or are DSLR cameras always better no matter how old they are?

Yes and no, there are too many variables on the DSLR/digital rangefinder side of things.A DSLR is a system camera, everything on it is interchangeable, so with a good lens on it the DSLR on paper will win every single time.Next you factor in a photographer, a good photographer will get a lot more out of a system camera than a novice. As a result the results achievable has great variation.Moving onto lighting and environmental conditions, shooting outdoors in decent light an experienced photographer is more than capable of getting top quality images from a compact camera. The limiting factor is when there isn't much light, then the compact starts to lose out because it cannot produce good images at higher ISO speeds, whilst the DSLR with it's big CMOS sensor and RAW output runs away the big winner. Then you have to factor in ergonomics and useablility. Even a battered old DSLR like mine is 100 times faster to adjust than the best compact. As a result I get a higher hit rate with the DSLR. I'm less likely to miss shots with a DSLR.So maybe 1 out of 100 times a compact may be able to beat a DSLR, but most of the time the compact has the odds stacked against it.

Age is not what makes them better (or worse) as much as sensor size. DSLRs have much larger sensor sizes than point-and-shoots which generally allows for better image quality. The lenses that go onto DSLRs' mounts are also of much better quality.

Any DSLR before the Canon D60 or the Nikon D70 isn't really worth bothering with.Any DSLR from these camaras on will outperform any compact - in the right hands!DSLRs have faster more accurate focusing, have more user control and can accept a variety of lenses from decent starters to optimal quality professional lenses.Another issue is the sensor size and the effect this has on pixel size. 6MP compacts were okay. Anything above that and you are looking at very restrictive aperture limited diffraction and noise.Worst of all the lens is built in and cannot be upgrqaded.

Normal cameras are better in term of compact size and ease of carrying around.Image quality is not as good as DSLR.
