Blackberry Pearl won't hold a charge?

My BB Pearl is having some issues (again...). When i plug it in, the red LED light comes on for a second, and it starts up. But then it says "Battery drained, shutting down handheld." so in other words, it will only hold a charge for a split-second. Help! i've had countless issues with this phone.
