Can my computer edit AVCHD?

I can playback the video on the computer fine in HD from my Canon HF20, but when I import into Sony Vegas 8 Pro or Adobe Premier Elements 8, it becomes jerky. Windows 7 will run and save avchd in in media player.....Sony is not compliant with cannon avchd Adobe Premier Elements 9 is supposed to be great with avchd. get window 7, your system is finebut avchd will challenge every resource even on the best machines.
