Do I need a receiver for my home theater system?

That's the system I want to buy. Can I just buy this and hook it up to my TV and be ready to go? Because I've been seeing things about "receivers." Two questions about receivers:

1. Do I need a receiver for my surround sound/home theater system?
2. What exactly does a receiver do?
