How can I get HD channels without one of those digital box? I have a 40" LCD 1080p HD tv but I'm not fully taking advantage of the HD. I have normal cable tv and I only get 480p which is standard. Is it possible to receive HD channels without subscribing to those HD box? If so, what would be the less expensive way to do this?

There is no way to do this, cable companies only allow the HD boxes to receive the HD signal.

Just connect an antenna to the coaxial input on the back of the TV labeled "antenna". If you don't have a newer antenna you might try a Radio Shack and spend anywhere from $20 indoor antenna or $80 for a rooftop antenna. (This method only works with newer TV's that have a built in ATSC tuner which most new TV's have)
I get channels like CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC and there 100% free. It's only the basic local channels, you can't get like Lifetime in HD. Those you are required to have an HD receiver.
The other way would be to get an HD receiver from either your cable company or satellite company. It gets expensive but worth it.
By the way if your TV is already using the coaxial input because the receiver your using doesn't have composite or component, (GREEN,BLUE,RED cables) then you have to get a splitter and a switch box that lets you switch from the receiver signal or the antenna signal.
Take care,
