If I buy TV speakers will they work when?

If I buy TV speakers will they work when...? I currently have my laptop hooked up my TV (VGA and audio cable - standard 3.5mm jack going from laptop headphone input to same on back of the TV) so that the picture from my laptop is displayed on the TV screen and the sound comes from the in-built TV speakers instead of the laptop.

I'm thinking about buying speakers for my television, which I assume would connect with a 3.5mm standard jack (in the speakers) to a 2 x RCA cable (back of TV) - this would mean my laptop sound would be input into my TV and the TV sound would be output by the speakers right?

So, with the new set-up, would the laptop sound come through the new speakers, or still through the inbuilt TV speakers?

Thanks, just want to know before I invest. Also, can anybody reccomend a good set of TV speakers, preferably for around £20?

Answer Question

The answer should be yes but you need to see exactly what you have for outputs on the back of your TV. If the outputs are RCA jacks then these are likely preamplifier outputs and would need to connect to either a receiver or amplifier or to amplified speakers. If you have some sort of spring load connectors for individual wires then an amplifier should be built in and can be connected directly to speakers. If you do have a built in amplifier with speaker output jacks there will be a button or switch to select between the built in speakers and the output jack. Or, it's possible this selection could be made somewhere in the on screen menus instead. If the outputs are preamplifier (RCA) and if you connect them directly to amplified speakers you might need to search your menu options to select whether these outputs will be controlled by the TV's volume control. If you are connecting to amplified speakers this will be the only way to control volume. If you are connecting to a receiver then you will want to set these to "fixed volume" and use the receiver to control volume.
