Why does it take so long for my nikon D5000 to take the picture? how can i make it faster?

when i press down to take a picture, it literally takes 5 or 6 seconds until it actually takes it. granted, it's focuses and all that, but it takes just too long!its really inconvenient because if people are posing they have to wait (and its awkward) and if its something moving, i cant capture it!i just bought this camera so im unfamiliar with everything--but i know there must be a way to change this! could you please help!!?!?

Answer Question

Whenever I have a question/problem such as yours, I read the user's guide (aka "the manual"). It is amazing just how much I always learn from that.If that doesn't help (or if I'm interested in a product I don't own), I check the manufacturer's website. They have descriptions and specs for their gadgets, often have user forums, and the decent manufacturers all let you download the manuals in electronic form (so losing the book is no longer a problem).99% of the time that does the trick.

Are you using the LCD screen to take your photos with? If so, turn that off, and use the viewfinder (the hole you press your eye against and look through) instead. Because of how dslrs are designed, using the viewfinder is much much faster than using the LCD screen. Have fun and good luck!

You're not supposed to press it down all at once. Hold the button down halfway -- it'll focus and do it's thing at that point. When you're ready to take the picture, press it down all the way. At that second part, it should only take a fraction of a second to take
