Yamaha receiver shuts off when I turn up the volume-?

Yamaha receiver shuts off when I turn up the volume-? I had this system yamaha htr-5830 hooked up at my old house with different speakers and it worked fine I could blast it as loud as I wanted-
now I have moved and hooked up different speakers - a set of 5 advent surround small bookshelf size speakers- and am using rca brand 16 gauge speaker wire and it can't turn it up near as loud before it shuts off- the way my yamaha is designed is to shut down to prevent damage or overheating when something is wrong with the speakers *typically it is when the positive and negative touch like one becomes disconnected and touches th other* that however is not the case now- everything is hooked up completely fine I have checked all connections- anyway when I turn the volume up or something loud happens during a game or movie it powers off- when I turn back on it says check speaker wires it is fine until I turn it up again- is this because the wire gauge is too small for the speakers? this is a good receiver and I know it can handle the speakers- would too small of a gauge of speaker wire cause this to happen?

any know how would help-
I know quite a bit about home theater but this is stumping me-I have never had anything like this happen before-

as for the troubleshooting goes I have checked the wires connecting the back of the speakers and where they connect to back of the receiver and everything is fine- also the speaker wire is brand new so I know that's not the problem- the speakers all sound good too at a low volume level-

thanks guys for all answers!

Answer Question

One of two things is happening, and I suspect the first:

The Advent speakers are lower impedance than the old speakers, and when you push the receiver, it starts to heat up and shuts down. The Advents may be rated at the same impedance as the old speakers, but impedance is a nominal rating. It varies throughout the frequency spectrum, and the average of the Advents might be low enough to kick the protection circuits at high volumes.

The only other thing that could be happening is that the receiver has developed an internal problem, which only "the guy" could answer, meaning a serviceman.

Good luck!
